This prestigious competition, which is eagerly anticipated by participants and audiences alike, typically takes place in January each year.
The championship offers a platform for aspiring public speakers to demonstrate their skills, with contests spanning multiple categories that mirror those in traditional Toastmasters clubs. Participants engage in a variety of challenges that test their abilities in prepared speeches, impromptu speaking, and more, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and personal growth.

Exploring the Contest Categories

The championship includes four main contests, each of these contests provides unique challenges and opportunities for growth, allowing Toastmasters members to develop different aspects of their communication and leadership skills in a supportive yet competitive environment.

International Speech Contest

The International Speech Contest is often considered the most prestigious of all Toastmasters contests. Key features include:
  • Speeches are 5-7 minutes long
  • Topics are chosen by the contestants
  • Speeches should be substantially original
  • Judging criteria include content (50%), delivery (30%), and language (20%)
This contest allows speakers to showcase their best speaking abilities on a topic of their choice, often focusing on inspirational or motivational themes.

Humorous Speech Contest

The Humorous Speech Contest challenges speakers to entertain their audience while delivering a structured speech. Key aspects include:
  • Speeches are 5-7 minutes long
  • Content should be thematic and not just a series of jokes
  • Judging criteria include content (50%), delivery (30%), and language (20%)
  • Audience response, including laughter and interest, is a significant factor in judging
Speakers must balance humor with a clear message and structure, demonstrating their ability to engage and entertain an audience effectively.

Table Topics
Contest

The Table Topics Contest tests a speaker's ability to think on their feet and deliver an impromptu speech. Important points include:
  • Speeches are 1-2 minutes long
  • All contestants receive the same topic, determined by the contest chair
  • Contestants are introduced to the topic only when they are called to speak
  • Judging criteria include content (55%), delivery (30%), and language (15%)
This contest showcases a speaker's quick thinking, creativity, and ability to structure a coherent response with minimal preparation.

Evaluation
Contest

The Evaluation Contest assesses a speaker's ability to provide constructive feedback. Key elements include:
  • Contestants observe a 5-7 minute test speech
  • Evaluations are 2-3 minutes long
  • Contestants are judged on their analytical skills and ability to provide helpful feedback
  • The CRC (Commend-Recommend-Commend) approach is often used
This contest helps develop critical listening skills, analytical thinking, and the ability to provide constructive feedback in a concise and effective manner.

Event Details

  • Typically held over two days in late January
  • Attracts participants from numerous Gavel Clubs across Oman. For example, in 2023, 33 Gavel Clubs participated with 264 contestants in the semi-finals
  • The event has been conducted both virtually (in 2021 and 2022) and in-person in 2023 & 2024
